GEO: getting your business found by AI search.

Your next customer may never see a Google results page. How to make your website visible to ChatGPT, Claude, and AI-powered search — structured data, llms.txt, and content that answers.

Abstract layered waves with one teal wave

A growing share of your prospects will never see a Google results page. They ask ChatGPT for "a good agency for a custom LMS," or ask Claude to "compare booking platforms for property managers," and act on the answer. If your website is invisible to AI systems, you're not in that conversation. This is what people now call GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — and the good news is that almost nobody is doing it yet.

First: check you're not blocking them

The most common GEO failure is self-inflicted. CDN and security providers ship one-toggle "block AI bots" features that disallow ClaudeBot, GPTBot, CCBot and friends across your whole site. That toggle makes sense for a content publisher worried about training-data scraping. For a business that wants customers, it's like unlisting your phone number and wondering why nobody calls. Read your live robots.txt today — you may be surprised what it says on your behalf.

Structured data: speak machine

AI systems parse your pages the way a very fast, very literal reader would. JSON-LD structured data removes the guesswork: it states outright "this is an Organization, founded by this person, offering these services at these prices; this page is an Article, published on this date." Schema markup was already a Google best practice — for AI answers it's closer to a requirement, because it's the difference between being mentioned and being described accurately.

llms.txt: the menu for AI readers

A newer convention worth adopting early: an llms.txt file at your site root — a plain-text map that tells AI agents what your site contains and where the important pages are, the way robots.txt guides crawlers and sitemaps guide indexing. It costs nothing, takes an hour, and puts you ahead of the overwhelming majority of your competitors.

Content that answers, not content that ranks

Classic SEO content chased keywords. AI systems retrieve answers. The content that gets cited in AI responses is specific, structured, and honest: real numbers, clear comparisons, stated trade-offs. "Custom LMS vs off-the-shelf: an honest framework" gets retrieved; "Top 10 LMS trends 2026" does not. Write the article your prospect would want read aloud to them.

  • Use real headings that state the question each section answers.
  • Put concrete facts in crawlable HTML text — not in images or JavaScript-rendered widgets.
  • Keep one clean semantic page per topic instead of thin variations.
  • State prices, timelines, and processes plainly — vagueness doesn't get cited.

Why this window matters

Traditional SEO is a two-decade-old arms race. GEO is year one. The businesses that make themselves legible to AI systems now — open robots policy, structured data, llms.txt, answer-shaped content — are setting the baseline that everyone else will be chasing. It's rare that a marketing advantage this large costs this little.
